Chapel Gets Approval For New Defense Team

It has been a long hard struggle against overwhelming odds but Mike Chapel may finally get a new chance for justice with a council of his own choosing. Mr. Chapel has been incarcerated for over 4 years for the April 15th, 1993 murder of Emogene Thompson.

After nearly two months since the May 2, 1997 hearing, Gwinnett Superior Court Judge Fred A. Bishop has signed an order allowing Washington defense attorney Randy Mott to handle Chapel’s appeal as lead council. Atlanta attorney John Pickens will will represent Mr. Chapel as local council.

Attorney Randy Mott's reaction to the decision was very positive. "We are happy to finally be in the ring", he stated to Gwinnett Online during a phone interview.

Mr. Mott mentioned the possibility of a September hearing where the defense will ask for a new trial. At this time they will present new evidence gathered primarily by former CIA Agent Boris Korczak. When asked how he felt about the judge's decision Mr. Korczak replied, "I think it is very positive, a real step forward." Then added, " We are beginning to see the results of all our hard work and are now ready for a fight."

Erin Chapel, Mike's wife, stated she was pleased with the decision and was glad her husband's defence would be handled by attorneys from outside Gwinnett County. She has held fast to the opinion that Mike had been railroaded by the Gwinnett Police and the prosecution who were attempting to keep him silenced about alleged corruption within the department.
